A little background on Hitchin:
Hitchin was described as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book. The town is shown on 7th century maps, and the site of the present parish church, St Mary's, may date back to that time. St Mary's is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, with a tower dating from 1190, and much of the existing building dating from the 15th century. Evidence unearthed when repairing the floor showed the foundations of a 7th century chapel, enlarged in the 10th century.
